City of Culture
Kandy can be introduced as “the cultural capital of Sri Lanka” due its high influence in ancient architecture, paintings and foot prints in Sri Lankan history. The architecture and atmosphere of the city certainly gives a hint of majesty that cannot be found in any other city in the country. After Colombo, Kandy is the next busiest city in Sri Lanka with busy streets and busy shopping lanes.
If you are going to visit the city with “Trips Lanka” we will first take you to The Temple of the Tooth in the heart of Kandy. Known as “Dalada Maligawa” in Sinhalese this place is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage in the world. It holds and protects the Lord Buddha’s tooth which is the most important relic for Buddhists all over the world –. This is a must see place if you are visiting Kandy. Next to The Temple of the Tooth is the international Museum of Buddhism.
During July, Esala Perahara is taking place in Kandy to pay respect to the Sacred Tooth Relic. This festival is a grand celebration with highly maintained rituals, traditional dance items, elegant costumes and numerous cultural items.
You should of course take a tour to the busy streets of Kandy. You can find little monuments with a touch of historic pride and jewelry, clothes and many more things.
“Trips Lanka” will not forget to take you on a walk around Kandy Lake. If you are interested you get a chance to go on a boat ride also. Kandy offers a much cooler atmosphere compared to other cities.
